Learning 2007: The Rest of Tuesday

The Blogging session went pretty well. I expected maybe three people and instead I had a full room. It's worth noting that I had the only room in the convention center that was hot and not cold. I even had to open the door to let some air in. I'm pleased with how the session went. Hopefully everything the participants need is on the wiki. Hopefully folks participate on the wiki.

With everything that's been going on, topped off by the conference, I'm exhausted. The speakers at the afternoon session didn't thrill me, so I skipped. However, I met some neat folks by the outdoor bar, so the conference was still a primary topic of discussion. I'm also most likely skipping the morning sessions tomorrow, and I'll only go to the General Session, as I'm excited to hear Ken Blanchard. That way I can get my bags packed and checked and check out of the room without too much rush.

Here are the remainder of today's relevant Twitters:

Learning 2007: A little bit tired

I haven't had the most successful day today with Learning 2007. I started the day with the opening sessions, which I enjoyed for the most part. (See the Twitters from this morning.) From there, I moved on to a session on creating a virtual human, held in the lab. There was no creating and I was disappointed in the speaker. That's when I took a few moments and posted the Twitter feed on this blog since I was in the lab anyway.

From there, I went to a Don Tapscott keynote follow-up session.  This was interesting. However, I was so sleepy, I cut out 15 minutes early.

After a quick lunch, I headed over to the far side of the convention center for a session on blogging. Turns out, it was cancelled. So I headed back over to the opposite side for a session on Designing for the iPhone. I got there and that session had been moved back over to the far side. However, I was standing right around the corner from a room in which I present in an hour, and fairly close to the computer lab. I was tired. I ended up back in the lab, where I'm blogging. I'm also eavesdropping on a session on Second Life, which is interesting. That's on my to-do list: learn more about Second Life.

Being exhausted is my fault. Yes, the Masie conference is tiring and sort of overwhelming on the brain at times. But in dealing with a family crisis last week, I neglected to put together my presentation. So I did it all last night and I'm mostly winging it I think. It's blogs. I'm a blogger, probably first and foremost anymore. I will hopefully be okay.

You can view my wiki page so far here, but unless you're an L2007 participant, you can't edit or comment.

Offices Closed + Conference

The offices of Write Technology will be closed through the end of the month. We'll re-open on Monday, October 29.
We will be out this week due to another death in the immediate family, followed by the Learning 2007 conference next week. As of right now, I'm still attending the conference and intend to post.

Guest Bloggers

Every year I write blog posts during and after my Learning 200x event. This year, I've invited several colleagues to join me in the blogosphere.

I thought hearing from other conference attendees would offer you, my readers, differing perspectives on the conference. Plus, with so many sessions to choose from, there's a fantastic chance we'll all be attending different ones.

The first person to accept my guest blogging offer was Gary Wise. Gary is the Senior Director of Learning Architecture at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. Cincinnati Children's is one of the finest hospitals of its kind in the nation, and their education and training program keeps up with the reputation. Gary is also the forum leader of the local ASTD eLearning Forum. He has a fair amount of knowledge in LMSs and CMSs, among countless other things. He also likes a good glass of cabernet. Hopefully, Gary will find some time to post to the blog while he's at the conference or right after he returns. I look forward to it!

Wikis and Conferences

Now this is something I wish ASTD would do for TechKnowledge. It's a brilliant use of a wiki, but it takes some marketing.

Each year for Learning 200x, the Masie Center launches a wiki. The wiki has a page for each session, which the session leaders and, ideally, the participants, then update. Updating occurs before, during, and after the conference session. It's like pre-work, but better.

Using the wiki, session facilitators can get a better handle on what their participants are interested in hearing and better prepare for their sessions. The participants get a better idea on what will be covered and can make informed decisions about which session they want to attend.

Because the wiki sticks around for about a year or so afterwards, the discussion can continue.

Here's the catch: People are still afraid of wikis. I encounter it all the time. Elliot and the Masie Center team are tasked with "marketing" the wiki, trying to get folks to use it. It's slow going this year it seems, at least so far. Past experience tells me that the wiki will pick up some steam the week before, and during the conference.

The Masie Center has been sending out countless emails about the conference and about the wiki, encouraging people to go use it. But they're missing something (and it would be easily rectified). For their nifty social networking app, the Masie Center has provided a nice tutorial. However, there's no tutorial for the wiki. I think popping a tutorial onto the front page of the wiki would be great. In fact, PBWiki even has a nice little Flash tutorial that I've put into several of my other wikis. It's a simple step, but I think it would lessen the "wiki fear" that people seem to have.

Anyone can poke through the Learning 2007 wiki at http://www.learningwiki.com. Only registered attendees can edit and comment.

Another Reason to Come to Learning 2007

If you read the comments on the previous Learning 2007 thread, you'll notice that Elliott Masie himself actually posted a comment. He mentioned I might be leading a cool activity at L2007. I figured it was a book club. It turns out, I'll be leading a session there on something I know a lot about: blogs. More specifically: Blog Yes! Using a Blog to Generate Excitement for your Training Programs. I'll also be leading a Book Club on Everything is Miscellaneous

I'm pretty darned excited and I hope to see you there!

Oh - and I'm still working on the iPhone review. I'm determined to make it a decent vodcast.
